CASA VIOLETA
Casa Violeta
is located down a tranquil rural lane, so there is minimal passing traffic. The swimming pool, hot tub and both
the al fresco barbecue dining areas are totally private and the house is surrounded on three sides by beautifully
maintained tropical gardens with many indigenous plants and features. You can literally forget the world here as there's hardly
a building in sight when you're at the barbeque area or on the pool terrace.
This deceptively spacious farmhouse cottage was built in 1931 in a rural agricultural hamlet up in the hills
north of São Brás de Alportel, Algarve, Portugal. Named after a lady who used to live there, it maintains
the old Portuguese style, with cane ceilings and bamboo beams, thick walls and archways which lead you from room
to room beckoning a cool breeze in the hot summer months.
Casa Violeta has been restored sensitively, offering
welcome 21st century comforts in a setting which has remained relatively unchanged for the last 50 years.
Whilst
not specifically adapted for disabled persons, the cottage is all on one level and there are a maximum of four steps from
terraces - grab rails are handy and getting around is relatively easy. The covered shady top terrace overlooking the pool has been fenced all around for security of your small children,
gates on three sides respectively lead to the sunny pool deck, to the back garden and at the front to the veranda.
Casa Violeta is the ideal place to relax
and unwind whether for a peace-seeking couple, four friends sharing, or for a family of four (a cot plus high chair can be
supplied for a fifth small person, free of charge - please specify this requirement when booking). The private
pool (8m x 4m, 90cm-190cm depth) entertains the children and adults alike all day long and there are many quiet walks,
bike trails and picnic opportunities in and around the hills and man-made lakes in the area. The pool is heated continually in cooler months to a "swimmable" 23C
free of charge, but if you want a luxurious boost to 28C it will be Euro 200 per week, payable on arrival. Apologies
for this but electricity is very expensive in Portugal especially if guests forget to put the pool cover on at night. There is one large double bedroom with superking size (6 ft) bed (with plenty
of space for a cot if required) with ensuite bathroom, and a twin room next to the house bathroom. The cottage also comprises
a spacious sitting room with working feature fireplace, satellite TV, DVD and CD player. There's a separate dining area
adjoining the kitchen, which in turn leads conveniently out to the secluded back garden with its al fresco eating
area and barbecue
Casa Violeta is about 45 minutes' drive from the nearest
airport at Faro; five minutes' drive up a good mountain road from the district's main town, São Brás
de Alportel, where there are many popular amenities - amazingly inexpensive restaurants (including Indian, Chinese, pizza),
bars, cafes, supermarkets, hairdressers, a tourism office, museum, a good taxi service (about 8 Euro from São Brás
to Casa Violeta) etc. Car hire is recommended although if you really don't want to drive we can arrange for a taxi to
pick you up from Faro airport (about 30 Euro) and can help with hiring bikes for you. If you want the taxi to meet you
at the airport, take you shopping on the way home, and then take you back to the airport at the end of your stay this
will be 55 Euro (at the time of writing).
